The Ruth R. Abel Memorial Book and Film Discussion Group
Wednesdays at 7 p.m. in the Shorday Room

Bright Star - a flim about JohnKeats and Fanny Brawn

On Sept. 15 at 7 p.m.,
join the discussion in the Shorday Room on:
Bright Star
an award-winning, Jane Campion film about John Keats and Fanny Brawne.

"...an affecting and deeply considered study of the last years in the short life of John Keats, and the ecstasy of loss which suffuses his love affair with Fanny Brawne – a love thwarted not due to illness, but to a pernicious web of money worries, social scruples and irrelevant male loyalties."
by Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian

Borrow the film and watch it before the discussion.
Reserve your copy from the Library Office soon.
You may also borrow this title from the library system.

Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larson

On Oct. 20 at 7 p.m.,
join the discussion in the Shorday Room on:
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

by Stieg Larsson

"An international publishing sensation, Stieg Larsson's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo combines murder mystery, family saga, love story, and financial intrigue into one satisfyingly complex and entertainingly atmospheric novel."
From Random House

Available in the Library Office for $9.
You may also borrow this title from the library system.

Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel

On Nov. 17 at 7 p.m.,
join the discussion in the Shorday Room on:
Wolf Hall

by Hilary Mantel

(2009 Booker and NBCC winner)

"England in the 1520s is a heartbeat from disaster. If the king dies without a male heir, the country could be destroyed by civil war. Henry VIII wants to annul his marriage of twenty years and marry Anne Boleyn. The pope and most of Europe opposes him. Into this impasse steps Thomas Cromwell: a wholly original man, a charmer and a bully, both idealist and opportunist, astute in reading people, and implacable in his ambition. But Henry is volatile: one day tender, one day murderous. Cromwell helps him break the opposition, but what will be the price of his triumph?"
From Macmillan

Available in the Library Office for $10.
You may also borrow this title from the library system.

If you have suggestions for books, films, or poets you'd like to discuss, please email kburnham@mclinc.org.

Edward Pettit is our discussion leader.
